Shaw signs on for 2018

Tom Shaw is the latest name to be confirmed in Newcastle Thunder’s squad for the new season as the final pieces of the 2018 jigsaw begin to fall into place.

24-year-old Shaw returns to the ranks for the forthcoming League 1 campaign, having enjoyed a good first season in Thunder colours after joining from Northumbria University.

The Halifax-born half-back played extensively for the university side during the course of his studies in Sports Nutrition and Strength and Conditioning, including the past two seasons that have seen the side win the Premier North league.

A product of Siddal ARLFC where he started playing aged six, Shaw has also played as part of the U18s at Oldham and U23s at Halifax before choosing to focus on his degree and restrict his playing activities to the University’s side.

Making 11 appearances over the course of 2017, Shaw’s performances were typified by him playing well with the ball in hand and attacking defences while playing a heads up style of rugby.

Shaw said: “I’m happy to have re-signed with the club for another year. After seeing how far we came in the second half of the season, it makes 2018 an exciting prospect and that made deciding to say an easy decision.”

Thunder head coach Jason Payne said: “I’m really happy Tom has decided to stay with us, he was thinking about going to Australia but eventually decided that he wanted to stay for a little longer and see what he could achieve.

“He really stepped up last year when we had injuries in the halves, he played way beyond his years and put in some great performances to help the team make the top five.

“Tom has been with me all the way through his time at Northumbria and now at Thunder, I know how talented he is and what he can achieve if he puts his mind to it. I’m looking forward to seeing him continue his development here and hopefully, he can have a great year.”
