SIGNING – Jed Charlton graduates from Thunder’s academy

Jed Charlton is the second Under 19s Academy starlet to be confirmed in Thunder’s 2019 squad as the club today announce the signing of the second row on senior terms.

A product of Gateshead Storm, Charlton captained the Under 19s last year and made three appearances for the First Team towards the end of the 2018 season when he started against Oldham, Doncaster and West Wales Raiders.

Impressing in those fixtures by further underlining the consistency that has become a watchword of his game and showing he retains plenty of scope to develop further.

Having missed only a handful of games since coming onto Thunder’s Academy system as an Under 15, he has proved to be a mainstay of age grade teams throughout his junior years.

An aggressive player, the Northumbria University Student’s three League 1 appearances in 2018 demonstrated that Charlton is well suited to the demands of League 1 with further evolution expected in the upcoming season.

Looking forward to the challenges of establishing himself in the first team, Charlton said: “Its a big challenge but its a very exciting one.  There are a lot of good players in the 2019 squad and it will be good to be able to learn of them and step up.

“League 1 is a huge step up and I am going to have to work hard and look to get a bit bigger, but I want to push myself and build on the three appearances I made last year.”

Speaking on the player’s graduation, Michael Heap said: “Jed really embodies what this club is about. He is honest, uncompromising, determined and very reliable, a person who always gives his best effort and wants to win.

“Since joining the Academy as an under 15, he has been a real mainstay of Academy sides due to his consistency, work rate and leadership.

“He is an abrasive, athletic player he can play equally on an edge or in the middle with plenty of defensive enthusiasm as well as the skill level to make big plays.

“If Jed continues to work hard there is an opportunity here for him to force his way into the first team and be a real key figure in this club’s rise.”

Charlton joins Mo Agoro, Jack Aldous, Jared Blanke, Keal Carlile, Rhys Clarke, Dan Coates, Liam Finn, Conor Fitzsimmons, Sam Luckley, Remy Marginet, Liam McAvoy, Aaron Ollett, Alex Rowe, Niall Sidney, Evan Simons, David Weetman and Lewis Young in Thunder’s 2019 squad.
