MATCH REPORT – London Skolars 12 – 48 Newcastle Thunder

Newcastle Thunder earned their first win of the Betfred League 1 season on Saturday afternoon, following a morale-boosting 12 – 48 victory away to London Skolars.

Thunder started sharply by completing their first four sets in the face of a ferocious wind, which was shown as a clear influencer for both teams throughout the game.

They opened the scoring after 11 minutes through Mo Agoro, with the winger finishing off some skilful interplay from halfbacks Liam Finn and Remy Marginet with an acrobatic dive into the corner.

For all the positivity around the start, Thunder were behind before the 20-minute mark with a quick-fire brace from the Skolars allowing them to take the lead, they would, however, prove to be their only scores of the day, as Thunder regained their composure.

The visitors were able to close the deficit before the half time break, with a darting Keal Carlile break from the base seeing the hooker crash over to the left of the uprights, allowing Finn a straight forward conversion.

Half Time:

London Skolars 12 – 10 Newcastle Thunder

Needing a strong second half, the white and purple kits came bursting out of the changing rooms, full of enthusiasm and seized the initiative with five minutes played as Jack Aldous blasted his way through three defenders for a converted try that set his team on their way.

It was the first of a flurry of tries that gave Thunder the two points, with dual reg loanee Max Jowitt the next to cross, with a spectacular diving effort by the left corner flag, with Finn adding the extras on both efforts to extending Thunder’s lead.

Strengthening their stranglehold on the game, captain Misi Taulapapa found his way over the whitewash shortly followed by a try that started from Carlile who played a short bullet pass to Sam Luckley who barged his way over.

Marginet then performed magic as he strung together a series of plays stretching across the full width of the pitch before he placed a perfectly weighted kick for Aaron Ollett to dive onto and score.

It was two of the Wakefield dual registration loanees who finished the game on a high as Joe Arundel scored by exploiting an opportunity on the short side, before Jowitt wrapped the game up through his second of the of the day, demonstrating his blistering pace to jet over in the far corner.
