RE-SIGNING: Sam stays on for 2019

Sam Luckley will continue to be a strong part of Newcastle Thunder’s North Eastern core in 2019 after the loose forward agreed to a new one-year deal with the club.

The 22-year-old from North Shields has become an increasingly important figure for the club since making his debut in 2016, with his dependability a key trademark of his game.

Impressing with strong work in both attack and defence in League 1, Luckley has racked up more than a half-century of games for the club and is now a firm feature in the starting 13, with all of his 2018 appearances seeing him on the field from the off.

Having established himself in the Thunder squad during over the last three seasons Luckley is keen to get started for 2019.

He said: “I’m very excited to have signed another year with Thunder. The club has so much potential and I feel we’ll only develop further in 2019.

“I’m pretty young in the game so I’m looking to play as much as possible and learn from the experienced players and coaches at the club.

“I’m really pleased with how I developed last year. Everyone in the squad worked really hard throughout and it is always great to see that pay off.

Thunder head coach Jason Payne said: “Sam has developed at an incredible rate over the last few years and this is mostly down to how hard he works and his ethic is something that any young player needs to have a great career in the sport.

“He established himself as a regular last season and I believe that Sam has the potential to play at a very high level and I’m delighted he will be with us for another year.

“On top of that he is also a local lad and it’s great to see that the North East is now regularly producing players that can be in the Thunder first team.

Luckley is Thunder’s twelfth player to be confirmed for 2019 squad joining Jack Aldous, Jared Blanke, Keal Carlile, Rhys Clarke, Liam Finn, Remy Marginet, Liam McAvoy, Alex Rowe, Evan Simons, David Weetman and Lewis Young in the ranks.
