Sam stays on for 2020

Scotland international Sam Luckley will continue to be a strong part of Newcastle Thunder’s local core after the loose forward agreed to a new one-year deal with the club.

The 23-year-old from North Shields was a key figure in Thunder’s 2019 season with his dependability a key trademark of his game.

Impressing with strong work in both attack and defence, Luckley missed just one game for the club last season and has racked up a total of 78 appearances since making his first team debut against Leigh Miners Rangers back in 2016.

In addition to a new Thunder contract, Luckley’s performances have also seen him add to his tally of international caps for Scotland, having played in both of the Bravehearts’ victories over Serbia and Greece this autumn as they qualified for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

Thunder head coach Simon Finnigan said: “Sam was one of our most consistent perfomers last year and was very good for me throughout. He still has areas where he is a work in progress but he has an appetite to learn.

“He is good for the group and is a local boy as well playing every week in the first team and I was really excited when he decided to stay. I’m looking forward to getting him into pre-season of the back of a good autumn for Scotland.”

Luckley said: “I’m very happy to sign another year with the club, although we only just missed out on promotion I feel the club is headed in the right direction and I will do all I can to help get Thunder into the position it deserves to be”
