SIGNING – Gibson makes Thunder switch

Newcastle Thunder have added considerable experience to their midfield for 2020, as the Tyneside club have secured the services of Bradford Bulls centre Ashley Gibson for the forthcoming Betfred League 1 season.

Approaching the double century mark of appearances since playing his first games in 2005, the former England A cap has enjoyed a highly successful career and will complement the youthful enthusiasm that currently resides in the club’s back division.

A product of Stanningley ARLFC where he started as a nine-year-old, the boyhood Rhinos fans joined that club’s scholarship programme at 15 before making his debut at 18 against Leigh Centurions, scoring a hattrick in a 74-0 thrashing.

Making over 150 Super League appearances with the Rhinos, Salford Red Devils, Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Trinity, Gibson moved to the Bulls midway through the 2017 season and was a key component of the 2018 side that earned promotion to the Betfred Championship.

Restricted to fewer than anticipated appearances in 2019 through injury, Gibson is keen to follow in the footsteps of Kieran Gill and bounce back to form in the Thunder cause.

Speaking on his move to the North East, Gibson said: “I got a call of my agent to say Simon and Denis had been in touch and I really wanted to come up. I’ve known about the club for a while and I played for Bradford on the Friday night before the Magic Weekend and it was a real good atmosphere.

“It seemed like the club has a really good fan base and hopefully this year, I can do something good.”

Away from the field, Gibson has used his years of experience as a professional athlete in founding the Descry fashion label.

Ash joins Bob Beswick, Rhys Clarke, Alex Clegg, Sean Croston, Kieran Gill, Ollie Gowing, Kieran Hudson, Adam Lawton, Sam Luckley, Rory Nettleton, Quentin Laulu Togaga’e, Colton Roche, Evan Simons, Brad Walker, Tyler Walton, Mikey Wood and Lewis Young in the ranks for 2020.
