SIGNING – Kieran Gill joins on 2019 long loan

Newcastle Thunder will welcome one of Super League’s exciting young talents into the club’s squad for 2019 after agreeing on a year-long loan deal with Castleford Tigers centre Kieran Gill.

A free-scoring 22-year-old, Gill has already made his Newcastle Thunder debut having played for the club away to Bradford this summer and will bring further attacking prowess into the team for the new campaign.

Having rejoined Tigers in 2015 Gill earned a senior contract after impressing in the club’s Under 19 setup and made his Super League debut in 2017 against St Helens.

In what should have been the highlight of his career to date, a serious knee injury required a full reconstruction and kept Kieran out of the game for 10 months.

Having recovered, his 2018 season saw Gill make try scoring Super League appearances for Cas against Hull KR, Salford Red Devils and Wigan Warriors, as well as a further three starts for Oldham Roughyeds in League 1.

With his time out of the game seemingly having no effect on his ability to be a serious attacking threat, Thunder are hoping a settled season with one club will allow Gill to progress further and play a key role in the club’s push for promotion.

Speaking on his move to the North East, Gill said: “I’m really grateful for the opportunity with Thunder after a tough year last year and I’m looking forward to getting back to what I do best, with a team pushing for promotion. It’s something that I am very excited to be a part of.

“Coming back from such a major injury was tough mentally and physically but I grabbed every opportunity I got with Cas and I thank them very much for that.”

“With Thunder, it’s time to start proving myself to everyone and showing what I am capable of doing. I am looking forward to what this year brings.”

Thunder head coach Jason Payne said: “I’m really happy to have got Kieran on a season-long loan. He was fantastic for us in the game against Bradford at Odsall this summer as he was working his way back from what was a pretty serious knee injury.

“He has signed a new contract with Cas for this season but knew he needed to play more games to get back to his best and that is something that we are happy to offer.

“Kieran is a brilliant character in the changing rooms which means so much and I’m really excited to work with him towards achieving his goal of playing regularly in Super League.”

Gill joins Mo Agoro, Harry Aldous, Jack Aldous, Jared Blanke, Keal Carlile, Jed Charlton, Rhys Clarke, Dan Coates, Liam Finn, Conor Fitzsimmons, Kieran Hudson, Sam Luckley, Remy Marginet, Liam McAvoy, Aaron Ollett, Liam Richmond, Alex Rowe, Niall Sidney, Evan Simons, Misi Taulapapa, David Weetman and Lewis Young in Thunder’s 2019 squad.
