MINNS MOVES ON FROM NEWCASTLE THUNDER

Following discussions between the club and player, Newcastle Thunder have confirmed that centre Tom Minns will not be part of the club’s 2022 squad.

Minns signed from Featherstone Rovers ahead of the upcoming Betfred Championship campaign and reported for pre-season duties along with the rest of the new-look squad at the start of November.

Making an instant impression as Thunder embarked on a new, full-time training regime, both player and coaching staff were excited about working together following a positive start.

However, basing himself in the north east for training has proven to be a strain for the player, with his family remaining based in Yorkshire and the resulting time apart.

Approaching the club about the issues faced, both agreed it was in their best interests for Tom to be allowed to pursue alternative opportunities, with Thunder driving efforts to find him a new club for 2022.

Newcastle Thunder head coach Eamon O’Carroll said: “We were delighted to sign Tom for next season, and he has been a very good presence in the changing room, just as we thought he would be.

“He was one of the few players travelling to training with his family remaining based in Yorkshire and he came to speak to us about strains he was dealing with as a result.

“It was pretty clear that the situation wasn’t going to allow us to get the best out of each other, so in everybody’s best interest we have decided to help Tom move on and find new opportunities.

“He is working hard to seize one of these that we were able to set-up for him and we wish him the very best in making a success of that.

“I would like to personally thank Tom for the impact he has had on our group in such a short time and I wish him and his family the best moving forward.”
