HALL OF FAME INDUCTS BRADLEY, NEIGHBOUR, PAYNE & PEERS

Former Thunder stars recognised at inaugural Hall of Fame dinner

Newcastle Thunder celebrated the club’s rich history ahead of the Magic Friday clash with Bradford Bulls last weekend, as the inaugural Hall of Fame dinner was hosted pre-match at Kingston Park Stadium.

Thunder welcomed a veritable Who’s Who from the 23-year and counting history as four faces from the past became the first inductees to the hall.

Stephen Bradley, Kevin Neighbour, Jason Payne and Robin Peers were those to be recognised for their long-standing service to the club with an induction into the Hall of Fame, whilst a further 12 former players were also presented with their newly assigned heritage number on the evening.

There was also an outstanding contribution “Roll of Honour” award presented to current club chair Keith Christie in recognition of his efforts on behalf of Thunder over the last 13 years.

The event was held as the Newcastle Rugby Foundation officially launched its History of North East Rugby League project.

Fantastically supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund the project has thoroughly researched the history of professional Rugby League in the North East, from South Shields playing in the Northern Union in the early 1900s, Newcastle in the 1930s, and through to the modern Thunder era.

The programme will engage with volunteers, facilitate memories clubs and create an online museum that will also be launched on the evening to help tell the story of the sport in the region.

Christie said: “It was fantastic to see all of the former players back at the Club on Friday night. The contribution of those players, coaches and volunteers in keeping the club going during the tough years really has been outstanding and I’m delighted we were able to acknowledge this.

“This event marks the starting point for us to continually engage with former players and continue to keep the history of the club alive. I was humbled to receive this award on such a special night for the club.”
