Newcastle Thunder retain Gideon Boafo

Newcastle Thunder is delighted to announce that Gideon Boafo will remain at the club for the upcoming Betfred Championship season.

The 23-year-old joined Thunder ahead of the 2022 campaign from fellow championship outfit London Broncos. In one season for the team from the capital he featured 13 times and returned an incredible 16 tries.

In his maiden season for Thunder the prolific winger was a regular in the match-day squad, making 26 appearances. Continuing his try-scoring record, Boafo crossed the white-wash 11 times in Thunder colours.

Speaking on his decision to stay in the North East for the upcoming campaign, Boafo said: “I can’t wait to get started and back to playing some rugby.

“It’ll be great seeing all the lads again and seeing what the season has in store for us.

“Last season didn’t end how we wanted but with the new season comes a fresh start, and I know all the lads will be working hard to make sure we get back to where we should be.”

Newcastle Thunder chair Keith Christie had previously commented on player retention, saying: “It’s naturally been a turbulent time for a lot of the lads over the last few months, but we’re delighted to have been able to retain some of the great talent from last year.

“This is a really great opportunity for us to reset, rebuild and ensure we build solid foundations for Thunder moving forward. This is about solidifying the future of rugby league in the North East and ensuring we do everything we can to grow the sport and create a platform for our players for years to come.

“I’m personally very pleased that some of the lads from last year will be around to be part of that and as a club we want to thank them for their ongoing commitment to Newcastle Thunder.”
