Newcastle Thunder pushed to their limits in pre-season training camp at Catterick Garrison

The training camp with The Parachute Regiment saw preparations ramp up for the 2023 season.

The squad joined up in North Yorkshire on a very cold Saturday (December 10) ahead of a gruelling weekend of intense challenges set by the PARAs, on top of rugby training organised by head coach Chris Thorman and his coaching set-up.

Throughout the weekend the Thunder squad were challenged to series of team-building exercises, testing their limits and resilience.

These included a two-mile-long steeplechase in sub-zero conditions, with activities consisting of high-wire exercises alongside the dreaded assignment of running through icy water.

The camp also saw the squad partake in activities such as a gun-run and evacuation challenge, set to roleplay scenarios similar to what the PARAs face whilst on duty.

Although definitely pushed to their limits the lads throughout they maintained their drive and commitment to each other, getting the tasks done in some intense conditions.

Head coach Chris Thorman said: “We thought it would be good to take the lads to the Catterick Garrison just to get them outside their comfort zone, because when you do that you find out what people are about.

“You challenge them in a way they’ve maybe not been challenged before, both physically and mentally.

“We also felt it was equally as important to spend time together and be in each other’s company for a couple of days, to help grow that team cohesion and bond.

“The Pegasus Company were great hosts, and we can’t thank them enough for their hospitality over the weekend.

“Even if they pushed us to our limits and put us through our paces it was a great weekend for the squad, and we look forward to working with them in the future.”

Maj Chris Braithwaite, Officer Commanding Pegasus Company, said: “Pegasus Company thoroughly enjoyed hosting Newcastle Thunder.

“The weekend gave them an insight into the arduous training that a Paratrooper does, and hopefully increased their team cohesion in preparation for the upcoming season.

“We would like to wish them all the best, and hope our relationship with them continues.”
