Newcastle Thunder sign Max Flanagan

Newcastle Thunder is delighted to announce the signing of utility back Max Flanagan on a one-year deal.
The full-back, who is equally at home at half-back, is currently a student at Newcastle University and regularly features within their rugby league first team.
Flanagan, who had previously been involved in Thunder’s reserves set-up, has seen recent performances draw interest from head coach Chris Thorman, who has attended several university fixtures since taking over the reins of the Betfred Championship club.
Flanagan was also selected earlier in the year to represent the England Universities Rugby League squad for 2022.
Speaking on his decision to sign for the club, Flanagan said: “It’s great to have signed for Newcastle Thunder and be back amongst the fold.
“I’m really enjoying my rugby league with Newcastle University but I’m excited to make the step up and determined to make it a success.
“It’s been great training with the lads, and hopefully all the hard work we’re putting in will reflect in the performances on the pitch.”
Newcastle Thunder head coach Chris Thorman said: “Max has been involved with the club previously, playing for the reserves. He’s currently studying at Newcastle University and is one of the lads that stood out from the games I’ve attended over the last couple of months.
“We invited him down to train on the back of that to see how he goes, and he’s really impressed. He can play full-back or half-back and has a really good understanding of the game.
“He has aspirations to work his way into the first team, and after talking to him he was really excited about playing for Newcastle Thunder.
“I’m excited to have him as part of our squad, and even though he’s not a local lad he highlights another one of our strong affiliations and close ties with the community, emphasising the links between the club and universities.
“We need to use every outlet possible to strengthen the squads, from first team down to scholarships and under-15/16 levels. The universities certainly provide that opportunity, and for sure there is some untapped potential. I have no doubt that Max is going to prove that this season.”
