Matty Rolls commits to Newcastle Thunder

Scholarship prospect Matty Rolls has signed a contract at the club cementing his place on Newcastle Thunder’s player pathway.
The contract will allow Rolls to combine his studies with his training on a full-time basis at Kingston Park, thanks to the course introduced by TyneMet College.
The 16-year-old will see more training hours within the club’s first team set up under the guidance of head coach Chris Thorman.
Rolls is also now made available for any of the club’s remaining academy and reserves games in the 2023 season.
Signing the developmental contract, Rolls is another in the long line of local talent to feature within the club’s player pathway and epitomises everything the club stands for.
Speaking on his latest recruit, Thorman said: “Since I’ve arrived at the club we’ve been really big on developing the youth and having a really strong connection with the community and the community game.
“It’s also been a big aim of mine to have a strong scholarship and academy so we can develop a clear pathway the leads to the first team.
“Matty has been identified as one of the elite players in the county and the region and we want him to have a big future at Thunder.
“Part of how we can deliver that is to sign him onto a longer-term deal, offering him an opportunity to train with the first team and play for the academy and reserves.
“He’s a great kid and got some really good attributes when it comes to being a professional rugby league player.”
