Graham Steadman bids farewell to Newcastle Thunder after a record-breaking year

Newcastle Thunder would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Graham Steadman for his time and efforts as Head Coach of the club across the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

A Castleford legend and former Great Britain international, Graham stepped up from his initial interim role to lead the squad permanently throughout the 2026 season. He has worked tirelessly during his time with Thunder, and we are grateful for the commitment, professionalism, and dedication he has shown to the club and its players.

Under his leadership, Thunder enjoyed an incredible 16-match winning streak in the league that spanned over five months, claiming 21 victories out of 24 matches during the regular season. This historic run ultimately secured 2nd place in the Betfred Championship and took the squad to the Play-Off Preliminary Final, marking the highest league finish in Newcastle Thunder’s history.

The 2026 campaign was statistically unprecedented. Under Graham’s guidance, the team set new all-time club records for the most points scored in a season (1,093) and the most tries in a season (402). They were equally formidable in defence, conceding a club-record low average of just 12.58 points per game, achieving the highest attack and defence ratings the club has ever seen.

Newcastle Thunder CEO Richie Metcalfe added: “I want to personally thank Graham for his outstanding contribution to the club. He took on the challenge head-on and led us to unprecedented success on the pitch this year. His vast experience and high standards have fundamentally improved our squad, and he leaves Newcastle Thunder in a much stronger position than when he arrived. We are hugely appreciative of his hard work. The 2026 season will live long in my memory, and I am proud to have worked alongside such a dedicated and humble person in Graham Steadman, not just as a coach but as a friend.”

Everyone at Newcastle Thunder wishes Graham all the very best for the future and in his next chapter.
