Clarke expecting different test from Town

Rhys Clarke says Workington Town are going to be a different proposition for Thunder on Sunday when Kingstone Press League 1 gets underway for 2017 with a trip to the Zebra Claims Stadium.

It will be the second weekend in succession that Thunder have faced up to the West Cumbrian side, having taken a hard fought 18-16 win in the third round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup at Kingston Park last Saturday, but Clarke maintains nothing can be assumed in terms of a result on the basis of that game.

Speaking to Thunder TV, he said: “We are going to know a little bit about them from playing last week, but playing on our pitch, which is a nice fast pitch to going over to Cumbria where the weather forecast is not that great, you know it’s going to be a totally different place.

“I played over at Whitehaven before so know what it’s like for teams to go over there and play and it’s going to be the same when you go over to Workington, it’s going to be a hostile place, the pitch is going to be thick with mud and they are going to be really aggressive.”

Assessing this week’s opponents from last week’s experience, the forward added: “I thought they were really good last week, they were aggressive in the middle, they were good in the wrestle and they are only going to be better at home with the home support, so we have got to go there and make sure we get the job done.”
