SIGNING – Nettleton steps up to senior ranks On Field September 11, 2019 Newcastle Thunder are building up to the first instalment of the 2019 Betfred League 1 playoffs this Sunday with the unveiling of five new faces graduating into the 2020 senior squad from the club’s academy. Day three sees young Whitburn Academy alumni Rory Nettleton named as the next home-grown youngster to earn a berth in the senior squad for 2020. Captaining the Under 19 side through the 2019 campaign, Nettleton is one of the most consistent performers within the academy group and like Ollie Gowing, who was announced earlier this week as another graduate, has already made his first team debut in last season’s record breaking win over West Wales Raiders. Marked out as an energetic and extremely competitive individual, the Jarrow Viking has stood out throughout his formative years as a middle who is unafraid playing the game in a heads-up fashion and as adept as using skilful passes or direction changes as he is brute force. Arriving at the club’s academy as an under 16, Nettleton had to work hard to secure his place on the Thunder player pathway, with his commitment and hard work paying off and earning him his chance within the senior ranks. It is an environment where his excellent attitude and work ethic will harnessed by similar players and will challenge him to develop his game and skill sets further.
