SIGNING – Santi (Claus) joins for 2020

Newcastle Thunder have secured an early Christmas present ahead of the 2020 season with the signing of Italian international lock Brenden Santi from Betfred Championship side Toulouse Olympique.

The 26-year-old forward comes in following an impressive 2019 season in which he made 19 appearances for the French outfit as Sylvain Houles side finished the regular season in second place and narrowly missed out on making the end of season promotion finals.

Hailing from Bankstown in New South Wales, Santi’s Italian heritage has seen him earn 11 international caps for, including three at each of the last two Rugby League World Cups and one in the memorable 14-15 win over England ahead of the 2013 tournament.

A former Australian Schoolboys captain, Santi made his professional debut with West Tigers back in 2014 at a club where he was an integral part of the U20s setup, he went on to make 25 NRL appearances and brings a wealth of experience of NSW and Queensland Cup rugby.

A powerful and explosive player described as a no nonsense middle, Thunder head coach Simon Finnigan is confident the new addition will prove a firm favourite with players and fans alike.

Finnigan said: “Brenden was at Toulouse this year and last year as well and  just like everything he does. He has lots of energy and a little bit of aggression about him too so he will add to our group.

“We’ve lost Beans at the end of the season who was that type of player and was important for us, so we needed someone to come in and give us that and Brenden will bring those things. I am sure our fans and the boys will love him once he gets onto the field.”

Brenden joins Harry Aldous, Bob Beswick, Sam Blake, Joe Brown, Jed Charlton, Rhys Clarke, Alex Clegg, Dan Coates, Tyler Craig Sean Croston, Ashley Gibson, Kieran Gill, Ollie Gowing, Kieran Hudson, Adam Lawton, Sam Luckley, Rory Nettleton, Quentin Laulu Togaga’e, Colton Roche, Evan Simons, Brad Walker, Tyler Walton, David Weetman, Mikey Wood and Lewis Young in the ranks for 2020.
